It comes as no surprise to anyone that the internet practically imploded when WB announced that Ben Affleck, who portrayed the titular character in 2003’s Daredevil, would be the newest actor to don the cape and cowl in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. At the time many believed that the actor didn’t deserve another shot at a superhero role. However, much like Chris Evans as Human Torch in Fantastic Four, and Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern, Ben was given the opportunity to give the superhero gig another go. Now that promotional material, character posters, and the film’s most recent trailer which featured “Batfleck” taking on a room full of goons Arkham-style have trickled out, fans have more faith in Ben and some are predicting that his version of the Caped Crusader just might be the definitive, and most comic-book accurate live-action Batman we might ever see. Michael Wilkinson, the man behind most of the costume designs in the quickly expanding DC Extended Movie Universe had a moment to chat with People Magazine about Ben’s version of the Dark Knight while at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. Here’s what he had to say:
“I think people are going to be blown away by his Bruce Wayne and his Batman, It just feels right, like he was born to be this character. He’s sexy, he’s smart and seductive, he’s strong and a little intimidating and scary, he’s a real brawler, there’s nothing precious about his Bruce Wayne. He rolls up his sleeves and gets it done. Hold on to your socks because they’re about to get blown off.”
The Batman v Superman costume designer also had a chance in his interview to share how Ben Affleck reacted to seeing himself in the Cape and Cowl for the first time:
“I remember he just kind of looked at himself in the mirror, pretty happy with how he looked. The costume is very intimidating and huge and I think he intimidated himself when he looked in the mirror, so that’s a good sign.”
Aside from being an amazing actor, Ben Affleck also possess the skills as a writer and director. He’s won awards in both categories, with one coming in 1998 for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards for Good Will Hunting and most recently an Oscar for Best Picture with Argo. Naturally when you have someone like Ben on board your film, there’s always the possibility of him to throw out ideas or suggest adjustments to the script. According to US Weekly, that’s exactly what he did. The news outlet says that Affleck would occasionally rework the script while dressed as Batman.
“[Affleck] would go into wardrobe and get all suited up for the day in his Batman suit, Then he would sit around reworking the script. Ben wasn’t thrilled with it and he would find himself on multiple occasions fixing it the day of.”
Although this may sound worrisome to most, you mustn’t be. First off, the script was written by Oscar winning writer Chris Terrio, who worked with Ben on Argo, plus Ben has experience with writing before. All I know is that the next 4 weeks are going to be unbearable. Less than a month to go people, this is the home stretch! Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice makes its way into theaters March 25th, 2016.
Batman v Superman: Fearing the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on Superman, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman fighting each other, a new threat, Doomsday, is created by Lex Luthor. It’s up to Superman and Batman to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis.
