With the success of the highly anticipated and record-breaking release of Deadpool, writing for its sequel is already underway. In the first installment, fans got a taste of many familiar characters, as well as nods to the comics here and there but on the whole, the storyline for the film was mostly original. In an interview with CinemaBlend, this is what Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had to say about their process for writing the first movie:
“It’s how we went about the first one, you know? We dove into all of the runs, and then, you know, fell in love with the character and the tone and the texture. Then we set down the comics and came up with our own storyline, and I think we’ll do the same for the second one.”
The movie did an excellent job of keeping the characters true to the comics, which is what every fan can hope for in a superhero film. While drawing a bit from Deadpool’s origin story by Joe Kelly and Ed MCGuinness, Reese and Wernick were able to develop their own take on the story.*Spoiler Alert* Of course, it has been confirmed that in the sequel Cable is to appear, who is notorious for teaming up with the Merc with a Mouth in the comics, but that is all the information thus far. In the interview, the writers said that we can expect them to take a similar approach to the next movie. Some fans may want to see specific arcs recreated for the big screen, however the realm of comic book films rarely sees direct adaptions. If that were the case, people wouldn’t have to bother seeing the movies because they would already know the plot in its entirety. Still, fans don’t like to see a huge stray from the books, and the ‘Deadpool’ writers seem to have a good indication of where that balance lies.
So what do you guys think? Are you happy to see another original story arc for Deadpool 2? Or would you rather see a specific storyline from a Deapdool and Cable comic? Let us know in the comments!
