Today, the Scholastic Batman v Superman companion novel has officially been released. Inside the novel features never before seen images of Bruce Wayne, Batman, Alfred and so much more. We also get confirmation of a few things, like whether or not this version of Batman will kill or not. There’s a lot to get through so without further ado, let’s jump right into it.
Who would Batman be without his gadgets? Multiple kinds of Batarangs, smoke bombs, and grapple guns are all available in this Batcave for our Caped Crusader to choose from. The grapple gun image below mentions that throughout his many years of fighting crime, Batman’s grapple guns have essentially stayed the same. They never need to upgrade it due to the fact that each are handmade by Bruce and Alfred themselves, which is clearly visible in the wooden design of this iconic gadget.
Ever since it was shown that Batman would be branding some of his victims in the 2015 Comic-Con trailer, some fans were worried that this version of the Caped Crusader would be killing. For those of you that were concerned, it’s mentioned below that this version of Batman WILL NOT kill. Although this Batman is older, and more “war-weary” we will not see Dark Knight killing his victims. Fear not Bat-fans! Batman’s one rule stays in tact in this universe.
The tech cowl is by far the most interesting, and technological part of Batman’s arsenal. This cowl is placed under the traditional one, and it gives him the ability to see in the dark, view information via hologram sent by Alfred or others, and the tech cowl also features a voice changer at the base of the neck to help distinguish Bruce Wayne’s voice from Batman’s. Another thing to note is that in order for Batman to see in the dark, lenses slide down over his eyes in order for him to do so. Sounds like we may get a nod to the character’s iconic white eyes from the comics!
This Batcave differs greatly from the one seen in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. The new Batcave is held under Bruce’s glass house and features multiple, intricate levels which house many different things such as a garage which holds Batman’s many vehicles like the Batmobile and Batwing, and perhaps other means of transportation he has used in the years he’s watched over Gotham. Also posted up in the middle of the Cave is a shrine of his fallen sidekick, Jason Todd/Robin. It is also mentioned in this book that the Batcave contains a workbench where Bruce and Alfred make all of Batman’s gadgets by hand to avoid any suspicion from the outside world. This version of the Cave definitely sounds like it’ll be closer to how it’s depicted in the comics. One of the big things that separates Jeremy Irons’ Alfred from Michael Caine’s is that his version will be more hands on than he’s ever been before. In fact, Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman is a former officer of the SAS, the Wayne’s chief of security, and bodyguard. After the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne, he became Bruce’s legal guardian.
Also shown in the booklet is the Batcomputer like we’ve never seen it before in live-action. We see multiple large moniters, keyboards, and other various things that put other live-action versions of this supercomputer to shame. It is here where Batman monitors police radio chatter, does research on the many notorious villians of Gotham City, analyzes items he’s gathered while in the field and so much more. It’s even been shown in the most recent trailer that the computer contains flight sticks, which we see Alfred use to control the Batwing via remote guidance.
So there we have it! That’s pretty much all of the information we could squeeze out of these images. Which one is your favorite? Are you excited to see this new Batcave on the big screen? Are you interested to see this new version of Alfred? Let us know in the comments or on Instagram @DCUNews.
