Coulson might be missed in the movies but he’s forever in our TV screens (for now). In a surprising move, ABC has given ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ the green light for season 4. Usually, shows are assessed at the end of their seasons and the studio decides whether to renew or trash. The decision was made public one day before the mid-season premiere on Tuesday, March 8th. The show is in its third season and it’s flourishing with reviews. IMDb gives the show a 7.5 but personally speaking, if season 1 never existed, that rating would be much higher. With Marvel’s success being at an all time high after the Avengers, the show started airing in 2013 with the hopes of gaining more fans that need more doses outside of a movie theater. The show is inter-connected with the MCU but the MCU hasn’t acknowledged its existence (or Coulson’s) yet. Currently, the show is adapting a mix of HYDRA and Inhuman content to tie in to the future Marvel movie, set to release in 2020. It’s also adapting the Secret Warrior storyline in which Agent Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) and Skye (played by Chloe Bennett) are building a team of people with powers to go up against HYDRA.
For those wondering if the show will have a tie-in episode or event with the upcoming blockbuster ‘Civil War’; there have been rumors that the second half of season 3 ties in directly to the movie and might even get a mention in the movie itself. Usually, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ ties in an event during one of their episodes when a movie is slated to be released soon. Will we see Coulson back in the MCU? If he does end up appearing, I don’t think it’ll be hard to tell who’s side he’s on..
‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” airs every Tuesday on ABC.
