Last week, three of DC Comics’ most iconic heroes appeared on the big screen together for the first time in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, they weren’t the only costume-clad supers to appear in the film. Aside from The Trinity, we were able to see glimpses of other Justice League members in the world and what kind of situations they were in.
(SPOILER ALERT. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ ANY INFORMATION REGARDING BATMAN V SUPERMAN SPOILERS, CLICK AWAY NOW.)
For example: The Flash played by Ezra Miller. He technically had two cameos in the film, but for now we’ll stick to the more interesting one. The Flash appears to Bruce Wayne after the Knightmare sequence, in which we see Batman in a post-apocalyptic world presumably ruled by Superman. There’s an Omega symbol burned into the ground, and Parademons carrying people away – both signs of the vicious Justice League villain Darkseid.
In summary, Batman is looking for (what seems to me) the last piece of Kryptonite in this desolate world. Batman is then betrayed by a dealer who claimed to have it, and gets captured by Superman’s regime. The Man of Steel then kills the “Sons of Batman” (the Caped Crusader’s loyal allies) and proceeds to tell Bruce how “She was his world” and how “He took her from him” before killing the Dark Knight himself. Bruce then wakes up from the Knightmare, only to be greeted by the Scarlet Speedster himself, Barry Allen. With urgency in his voice The Flash says the following:
“BRUCE! LISTEN TO ME RIGHT NOW, IT’S LOIS! LOIS LANE! SHE’S THE KEY! AM I TOO SOON? GAH! I’M TOO SOON! YOU WE’RE RIGHT ABOUT HIM, YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT! FIND US! YOU HAVE TO FIND US BRUCE!”
Many fans believe that The Flash came from the Knightmare future to warn Bruce of Superman going rouge or possibly teaming up with Darkseid to take over Earth. According to Flash, Bruce must find the other members of the Justice League in order to save Lois and stop Superman from potentially turning evil. We may not know for awhile what this sequence truly meant but, Batman v Superman producer Deborah Snyder sat down with Collider to talk about the sequence, how it came to be, and a small hint as to when the purpose of it would be revealed. It’s not much to go on, but check it out below.
“This was kind of the opposite [of Breaking Bad] because we had the script and it wasn’t in the script. As we started then we worked on our script. I think we were in the middle of shooting and we stated working on the outline for the next movie and where they go, and Zack said ‘Oh my God let’s add this moment that is gonna pay off down the road, and we’ll find out more information.'”
The whole sequence had a Flashpoint Paradox-Injustice feel to it which I loved. For those of you who aren’t familiar with those stories: Flashpoint is a story that involves The Flash going back in time to stop a catastrophic event: his mother’s death. Injustice is an elseworld story where Superman turns into a vicious dictator after Joker tricked him into killing Lois and destroying Metropolis. Both are great stories that you should check out when you have a chance. What did you think of The Flash’s cameo? What could it mean for the future of the DCEU?
