Even though Captain America: Civil War will focus mainly on the titular soldier out of time, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man will also be heavily featured, as him and Cap are the reason for the Civil War in the first place. Despite that, fans have not yet given up hope that RDJ will starr in an Iron Man 4 some time in the future, even if it’s after Phase 3 of the MCU which ends in 2019. Now, however, he told USA Today that
“In a way it’s Cap 3 but for me it’s like my little Iron Man 4 and then it’s back to the thing we all recognize. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that’s how it is until it changes. If it changes.”
And while the Civil War comics definitely made Iron Man the villain of the story, Downey Jr. said that this will not be the case in the movie adaptation:
“If we’re going to go there, then we’ve got to save it for my swan song. I would still like to keep a general audience and mildly be in their favor somehow.”
