Yesterday, DC Comics hosted a panel at WonderCon showcasing their new titles and creative teams that would roll out this summer with the publisher’s new initiative Rebirth. The panel was hosted by Dan Didio, Jim Lee, and Geoff Johns and they brought members of the creative teams on stage for their respective books. When Rebirth was first announced a while back, many fans were very skeptical, myself included. Many assumed it would be another reboot like the New 52 was in 2011, and many expected DC Comics to start changing the characters to look more like their TV and film counterparts. Recently however, Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns squashed both of those rumors, and while they may draw inspiration from the TV shows and films once in a while, Johns stressed the fact that they are completely separate entities. This is a big difference between them and Marvel, who has made many changes to their own characters to reflect the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Johns, Didio, and Lee talked about how they are committed to respecting their fans and how they admit that they felt something was off with their comics. They admitted that there was something missing and as a way of respecting their fans, not only are they focused on making these characters the ones we’ve loved for years, but they’ve also brought down the price of every book to $2.99. Dan Didio explained the move as their commitment to the fans, going on to say that they want everyone to be able to read these books, love them, and ultimately, to afford them. For a big DC Comics fan like myself, this was fantastic news to receive yesterday and nearly EVERY book that they showed looked amazing. Rebirth begins May 25th with a One-Shot special by Geoff Johns with art by Ivan Reis, Phil Jimenez, Ethan Van Scriver and Gary Frank. The issue will be about 80 pages and the best news is that it will also only be $2.99. Not a bad way to show your fans how committed you are to your fans if I might add. So below now, I’ll list all of the Rebirth titles and then I’ll give my opinion on which books I’m really looking forward to!

So this is the entire schedule for DC Comics’s Rebirth relaunch. Honestly, just looking at these titles, it makes me SO excited for this to begin. Heck, I’m at the point where I almost don’t care about the titles right now and would rather just skip to Rebirth! While there are a lot of great books they’ve listed, there are some things that concern me. The lack of a Catwoman book bothers me (probably because I’m a huge Selina Kyle fan) especially since her book right now has been very good with Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda. Aside from The Hellblazer, there are no other “magic” books out. Sorry Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and Doctor Fate, you’re still left in the cold. No Justice Society of America as we were promised, and no Midnighter. While I understand some of the diverse books that I absolutely loved with DC You didn’t sell well and needed to be cut, it still stings. I was also hoping for a new writer to take over Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps but I guess that’s a no go. Aside from that, the rest of the line looks pretty awesome! Anyways, I’ll list my top 5 most anticipated books for Rebirth.
AQUAMAN. This shouldn’t come to a big surprise to those who know me but yes, Aquaman is my most anticipated title. Dan Abnett did a stellar job on his first issue last month and to see him returning for Rebirth makes me very excited. Brad Walker is on art. While I’m not crazy about the designs, it’s good to see Arthur and Mera back in a more classic look. It sounds like Abnett is really working closely with Geoff Johns to make sure his run aligns well with Johns past work on the title. The big news is that Johns and Abnett are working together on the highly anticipated story arc Rise of the Seven Seas. Abnett also teased that Black Manta would be returning soon and hell is coming with him!
GREEN LANTERNS. This title will focus on two of the newest Green Lanterns, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. I’m very interested to learn more about these two and the biggest selling point for me is that Bleez and the Red Lanterns are returning! Red Lanterns was one of my favorite series with the New 52 and I’ve been itching for more of them since. Bleez is one of my favorite Lantern characters too and when I saw her on the cover here, I was sold. Sam Humphries from Marvel recently signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics and he’ll be writing this book. The book features two brilliant artists as well: Robson Rocha and Ardian Syaf. This is a book you should definitely keep an eye out for.
DETECTIVE COMICS. James Tynion IV is taking Detective Comics in a completely new direction that has never been done before. I honestly wasn’t expecting much from this book but at the presentation I was completely sold. A favorite Bat character of mine is joining the Batfamily. That’s right, BATWOMAN is going to be a part of the Batfamily. Not only that, but she and Batman will be leading a team made up of Spoiler, Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain and…Clayface?! With art by Eddy Barrows and Alvaro Martinez, this will also be one beautiful looking book. I haven’t been much of a Tynion fan but I am definitely going to be trying this book out.
ALL STAR BATMAN. The comic community cried when we learned that the dream team of Batman, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, would be leaving the book. While Greg is taking a break from DC for a few months, many wondered what Scott Snyder would do. With Tom King taking over the main Batman book and James Tynion writing Detective Comics many were getting worried that Scott would be taking a break from DC as well. Well, our fears were swept away as Snyder announced that he had signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics as well as announcing his new Bat book, All Star Batman. The series will feature a variety of artists and focus on smaller stories that deal a lot with Batman’s fantastic rogue’s gallery. It’s all canon as well. Snyder explained the first story arc would feature Batman and Two-Face. We’ll be seeing the likes of Catwoman, Mister Freeze, Penguin, and Poison Ivy as well. If it’s a Batman book and it has Scott Snyder written on it, I’m instantly sold, but I’m also really interested in reading stories that focus more on Batman’s awesome villains and may be smaller in scope that his epics such as Endgame or Superheavy.
TEEN TITANS. I’ve been a big fan of the Titans and Teen Titans for a while now and judging by the cover of this, we might be seeing a more classic Teen Titans story. The big kicker is that Damian Wayne is trying to lead the Teen Titans and well…they aren’t having that! The art looks fantastic and the line-up is great. I’m a huge Starfire fan so when I heard she would be showing up, it made me even more excited. Though, I’ll admit, I would have preferred her to show up in Titans since she’s not a kid, she’s an adult. I guess the same could be said for Raven, but oh well. Maybe the two books will cross over at some point? That’d be cool. While I’m not a Damian Wayne fan at all, I do think it could be fun to see the Teen Titans and Damian clashing with one another.
Ok, I know I said I was only going to do 5, but I needed to add this one too.
THE FLASH. This book looks AMAZING and this is coming from a guy who isn’t really a Flash fan. The art looks absolutely stunning. It reminds me a bit of Manapul’s work on the book. You can just feel the motion in the art and that’s exactly what you need for a book like The Flash. The first arc will focus on a Speed Force storm that gathers over Central City that begins changing people into speedsters. So basically it sounds like Barry is going to have his hands full trying to mentor these new speedsters. And then, we’ll see a new villain face off against Barry named Godspeed. That’s such a perfect name, how has NO ONE used it before?
If this presentation of Rebirth is any indication of what the future of DC Comics will be, I’d say they are heading in the right direction. I don’t know about other DC Comics fans, but I can personally say I am all in. Bring on Rebirth DC, I will be there! Let us know what books you are looking forward to!
