In a recent interview with IGN Zack Snyder spoke out about his thoughts and the effects that Robin’s death has had on Batman in the DCEU.
Snyder: “In my mind it was that Robin had died about 10 years earlier, during some run in with a young Joker. So there was an interesting, sort of fun back story there to play with. I felt like the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice. You know like in a weird way he sacrificed everything to be Batman. He doesn’t really have a life outside of the cave. I thought that by including Robin, a dead Robin, was helping us understand that he’s been on quite a little journey.”
Snyder sadly doesn’t specify which of the Robin’s died 10 years ago but this story is adding up to be the story of Jason Todd. Jason Todd was the second Robin and he was murdered brutally by the Joker, leaving Batman with a very hard time moving on. He eventually accepts another Robin years later named Tim Drake but the second Robin wasn’t as dead as we thought. Jason makes his return to comics in the famous Batman story, Under the Red Hood. Jason returns to Gotham with a vengeance against criminals and most importantly against Batman.
This famous story is rumored to be the story for the solo Batman film!
