This February, Deadpool proved that super hero movies can very well be rated R, and still make a ton of money. Does this change the attitude studios are now looking at their upcoming films? While you should expect neither Marvel nor DC to entirely shift their focus exclusively to an older audience, there’s certainly a higher probability for one or to R rated films here and there – maybe more so on the DC side of things.
Many at first expected David Ayer’s Suicide Squad to receive an R rating, however, Ayer says that this was never the plan:
“For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here. We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.”
That being said, Suicide Squad does feature some of DC’s most violent villains: just look at the Joker, Harley Quinn or Killer Croc. With this in mind, Ayer would not be one to one to shrink from shooting for an R rating for a sequel to his movie, saying that “It would be worth lobbying for”.
