Star Wars the Force Awakens left fans and viewers wondering about several things director J.J. Abrams kept a mystery, one of which is the question of who Rey’s parents are. Following the film’s release, fan theories instantly arose questioning who they could be. Theories included Luke Skywalker as her father, or even Obi-Wan Kenobi as her grandfather, amongst other theories. However, J.J. Abrams recently made theorizing who the parents are just a little more difficult.
During a Q&A at the Tribeca Film Festival, a fan asked J.J. Abrams who Rey’s parents are, to which he responded:
“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII. So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”
This certainly puts a halt to the Luke fan theories. Although Rey may not be a Skywalker by blood, it can still be possible she is connected to Luke through some other way due to the Skywalker lightsaber calling to her and her natural inclination in the force. And while this new bit of information takes Luke out of the running as the father, it does not take Obi-Wan out who could still potentially be her grandfather.
