Snyder Explains The Knightmare; Hints At Possible ‘Justice League’ Villain Agenda

One of the coolest – and most confusing aspects of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, had to be the post-apocalyptic dream/vision that fans have took to calling “The Knightmare Sequence”. It featured Batman in a desolate world where Superman appears to be some kind of world leader or dictator. He’s got his personal army with him, who ambush Batman while attempting to retrieve a piece of Kryptonite in a last ditch effort to take down the Man of Steel. After Batman is killed in the Knightmare, The Flash then comes to Bruce – seemingly from the Knightmare future where he then warns him to keep Lois safe, and to find the other members of the Justice League. We know from previous reports that we’ll see an extended sequence of the Knightmare in the Ultimate Cut of the film, and thanks to Zack Snyder’s interview with Empire Magazine, we can (kind of) piece together what the sequence meant and what kind of secrets it holds for the future of the DCEU.

“I thinks it’s okay to look at the extended dream sequence as an impressionistic view of a possible future, that’s… in the sequence, so I’m not like spoiling anything or making up anything that you didn’t see. So the connection with The Flash… part of that sequence, you can speculate it, whether or not Flash is coming from that reality or another one, but that’s the fun stuff to try and figure out exactly what Flash is saying to Bruce and what he means…we know, so… we’re not making it up.”

We’ve actually solved one of the things director Zack Snyder is talking about, because we already know what Flash says! Check it out:

“BRUCE, LISTEN TO ME NOW! IT’S LOIS! LOIS LANE! SHE’S THE KEY! AM I TOO SOON? GAH! I’M TOO SOON! YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT HIM, YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT ABOUT HIM! FEAR HIM! FEAR HIM! FIND US! YOU HAVE TO FIND US BRUCE!”

As you can see, it’s very cryptic. Why is Lois the key? Does something happen to her in the future that makes Superman turn against humanity? What ever happens, we do know that Bruce is involved in some way. When Batman gets captured in the dream/vision, Superman says to him “She was my world, and you took her from me.” Another possibility is that a certain Justice League villain took control of Clark’s mind, and that Batman tried to use Lois as bait in order to snap the Last Son of Krypton out of it. Who could that villain be you ask? Well, two things in the Knightmare that clearly hint at the existence of the team’s major foe is the large Omega symbol etched into the ground, and those flying creatures we see picking people up and flying away with them.

These creatures are called Parademons, and are the loyal minions of DARKSEID.

Darkeid is the tyrannic ruler of the planet Apokolips which, actually, resembles the kind of world we see in the Knightmare sequence! Notice the fire pits in both images extending  from the ground:

Not only do these pieces of evidence clearly point to the Apokolips tyrant being involved in the sequence, Snyder also gave some pretty large hints to Darkseid, and what his agenda could be in future DC Films.

“Oh, that giant impression in the ground? oh yeah, that’s right. I mean, maybe Darkseid exists out in the universe somewhere, just looking for something, something that’s against life, i don’t know.”

If you don’t know what he meant by “something against life”, allow me to bring some clarity. He’s talking about the Anti-Life Equation. Remember how I said earlier that it’s possible that a Justice League villain could’ve taken control of Superman’s mind which caused that post-apocalyptic world? Well, prepare to have the dots connected. The Anti-Life Equation is a formula for total control over the minds of sentient beings, and the reason it’s called Anti-Life is because if someone possesses absolute control over you – you’re not really alive. In the comics, Darkseid is always looking to get his hands on the equation. So, my guess is that (based on the Knightmare vision/dream) Darkseid found the Anti-Life Equation, invaded Earth and took over Superman’s mind. He then used a world engine like General Zod, and Terraformed Apokolips to Earth which would explain why the two planets look so similar. Also I believe that the Justice League never existed in this timeline because they never knew that something this large was heading their way. THAT’S why The Flash went back in time to warn Bruce of the impending danger, that way he could gather up the rest of the team, and be ready for when Darkseid shows up. I hope you caught all that. So what do you think? Do you think it was all a dream? Or that it’s an alternate future where Darkeid and Superman take over a Justice League-less planet?
