With Captain America: Civil War premiering in theaters this week to begin phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are already looking ahead to see what is to come. While Civil War will introduce new characters into the fast-growing MCU, including Black Panther and Spider-Man, there are still plenty of Marvel superheroes who can be introduced in future films. Civil War screenwriters Chris Markus and Steve McFeely both had a hand in introducing Black Panther and Spider-Man into the MCU, and they will be given the opportunity to add more heroes to the expanding universe. When asked specifically who they would like to include, McFeely specifically stated:
“Namor. He is kind of a jerk and has a chip on his shoulder and he is a king and lives underwater. The degree of difficulty is so high, though. ‘Cause it could be a great movie or it could be truly terrible.”
Unfortunately, Universal Studios currently have the rights to the character, so until Marvel Studios negotiate and acquire his rights, The Sub-Mariner will not be able to appear in the MCU. It is possible Namor will not have the opportunity to appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but there is always the possibility of him appearing on one of Marvel’s Netflix shows. Namor appeared frequently throughout comics as a member of the Defenders, a show Marvel is currently in the process of making to appear on Netflix which could be a potential option for the King of the Sea in the future.
