Since Jennifer Lawrence first appeared in the X-Men universe in X-Men: First Class as Mystique, she openly expressed her negative feelings in regards to portraying the character. Specifically, the academy-award nominated actress had problems wearing the iconic Mystique blue makeup, and preferred she didn’t wear it, despite the necessity of the makeup for the character. After Lawrence signed with 20th Century Fox to play Mystique in First Class, she also signed for two additional X-Men films, meaning after X-Men: Apocalypse her contract is over. At that time, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy also signed a contract to play in three films, which will be concluded after Apocalypse, meaning it is unsure of whether any of them will return.
Regardless of Lawrence’s grievances in the past with portraying Mystique, the actress recently expressed her interest in reprising her role as Mystique, to the possible surprise of viewers who were under the impression her problems with the studio would prevent her from wanting to return. Lawrence was quoted on the matter, saying:
“Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking. Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back if you come back.’ Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are. I would love to come back. I love the fans and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don’t know. I shouldn’t be that honest.”
It appears Lawrence wants return, but it is possible she only will if the other two stars return along with her. Due to her previous issues with the films and the long amounts of time required to film each film, it is surprising she openly stated how much she loves being in the movies. However, only time will tell whether Lawrence, Fassbender, and McAvoy will return.
Jennifer Lawrence will return as Mystique, for possibly the last time, when X-Men: Apocalypse premieres on May 27th.
