Since the introduction of Netflix-original TV shows to the Marvel Cinematic Universe last year with season one of Daredevil, several new shows and characters have been recently included. The second Netflix TV show to be added to the MCU, Jessica Jones, introduced a popular character from Marvel comics: Luke Cage. Mike Colter’s portrayal of Luke Cage in season one of Jessica Jones was claimed to be one of the highlights of the season by many viewers. Following the character’s introduction to the MCU was the announcement of his own spin-off TV show, along with the confirmation of the character’s future appearances in upcoming seasons of Jessica Jones and The Defenders.
Little information has been released in regards to the details of Luke Cage, but the show’s lead actor recently spoke in an interview about Marvel’s latest Netflix show. He briefly mentioned the show’s plot, which will feature the hero’s motives influenced by politics. A political plot would also result in differences in Luke Cage than its predecessors. Colter spoke specifically on the subject, saying:
“There are politicians and then there are shady characters that function on the other side of the law. Who does what? I won’t say, but this becomes a situation where there are a lot of people who want to help Harlem and think they have Harlem’s best interests, but, ultimately, just because they think or say they have Harlem’s best interests, sometimes they’re being very selfish or being very short-sighted. So sometimes what they’re doing is actually harming the community. So this is where Luke comes in because Luke is a person who likes to, he observes and he listens and he takes in to account what people tell him, and he’s a pretty smart guy himself and he understands that some peoples’ way may not be the best, may not be the best in the big picture. So ultimately Luke has to get involved because there are a lot of things that happen, a lot of people get hurt, a lot of lives are lost and unfortunately he’s the only one who is capable of actually helping deal with this because sometimes the law enforcement is actually not the best because they’re not aware or they’re not capable, or maybe they’re corrupt. So, without getting into too many details, Luke Cage is gonna have to step up and be the man.”
When asked about which characters will be featured on the show along with Luke Cage, Colter did not reveal any information. Colter also mentioned the show will feature a different tone than Daredevil and Jessica Jones, which both featured rather dark tones, especially in comparison to the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both Daredevil and Jessica Jones were not only dark in tone and more mature, but much more violent which resulted in them being more comic-book accurate. However, only more details regarding the show will be revealed as we slowly approach the September 30th release date.
