During the production of Thor: The Dark World, problems arose among lead actress Natalie Portman and Marvel Studios when Portman’s hand-picked director, Patty Jenkins, was fired. Portman wanted to quit the series altogether, but she was contractually obligated to finish the film. Since then, the esteemed actress has not returned to fill her role as Thor’s love interest Jane Foster, and recent statements have confirmed she will not play the part again.
During a recent interview with Kevin Feige, the executive producer was asked about the award winning actress’ involvement in the third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok. It was during this interview that Feige addressed Portman not returning, saying:
“I can confirm that, yes.”
He continued, elaborating on the reasons, saying:
“Many reasons. Many of which are in the film so you will see that. There are only a couple of scenes on Earth in this movie. 80 to 90 percent takes place in the cosmos.”
According to Feige, the third installment in the Thor franchise will differ in the fact that the almost none of it will take place on earth, while the first two films predominately took place on Jane Foster’s home planet. This helped allow Natalie Portman’s character to appear often, throughout the majority of both movies. Along with this and her controversy with Marvel Studios, she will not make an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok, most likely as well as any other Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
Thor: Ragnarok will premiere in theaters on November 3rd, 2017.
