Marvel fans, myself included, could not contain their excitement when the news dropped that Spider-Man would be jumping into the arms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the unveiling of Tom Holland’s Spidey in a previous Civil War trailer, fans have become more hopeful that Marvel will strike deals with Fox to bring the Avengers and the X-Men together. Producers at Fox have already demonstrated interest in this sort of deal, specifically for an Avengers and X-Men film as well as a Deadpool and Spider-Man film. Now the talks are coming from Marvel’s end for a change; the directors of Civil War and the coming Infinity Wars (now to be renamed) Joe and Anthony Russo spoke with Collider’s Steve Weintraub about wanting Wolverine to come to the MCU. When asked which character they’d want to bring to the MCU the most, and here’s what they said:
“Joe Russo: Wolverine.
Anthony Russo: Yeah.
Joe Russo: First favorite character growing up was Spider-Man, second was Wolverine. One of my most-prized possessions is Incredible Hulk #181. It was his first appearance.
Weintraub: Do you have it graded or is it just in your collection?
Joe Russo: It’s in my collection. It’s sitting in a safe. I won’t disclose where it is.
Anthony Russo: I know where it is. And I would say Wolverine as well, for all of the exciting reasons that we all gravitate to.”
The timing of their statement is very interesting. It is well-known that the third Wolverine film will be Hugh Jackman’s final time portraying the character. If the Russo brothers wanted to bring him to their universe then this could be a possible route to take. Now bear in mind, this is all speculation and theory and nothing more; it’s safe to assume that Fox won’t recast Wolverine right of the bat, so maybe they could make a similar deal with Marvel that they did with Sony for Spider-Man and recast the famous mutie for the MCU. This could be the emergence of his existence in the universe, as well as (potentially) building a bridge to the existing X-Men universe. However Fox sets up Wolverine’s departure from their universe, the remaining characters will obviously remember his being there with them. Perhaps if inter dimensional travel were to take place as the route to intertwine the two franchises, the X-Men team would see Marvel’s version of Wolverine and make the comparison to the now-gone Logan they once knew (should Wolverine become a part of the MCU before the larger merger). They could then determine that they were two alternate versions of the same person. It gets very complicated, but such a huge family reunion is not expected to be simple. Once again, none of this speculation has truth behind it, just a personal theory for how the inclusion of Wolverine in the MCU could bring more Marvel titles together.
Public statements have been made on both the Marvel and Fox fronts for wanting the two to come together. Do you guys want to finally see this? Or do you prefer the universes remain separate? Let us know in the comments as well as on our Twitter and Instagram!
