Suicide Squad is easily one of the most anticipated blockbusters of this summer, as it will be the first comic book movie that focuses not only on antiheroes, but on actual villains. Jared Leto’s Joker is probably the most looked forward to character, due to the character’s nature and the actors who have portrayed him before (most notably Heath Ledger).
Though not technically a part of the Suicide Squad, the Joker will be a key component of the film, as he not only serves as the trigger to Harley Quinn’s origin story, but also is assumed to be the target of Task Force X.
There are countless theories revolving around him, regarding his connection to Batman, and him possibly being the presumed dead Jason Todd. And much of the evidence these fan theorists use arise from the Joker’s numerous tattoos that we’ve seen in trailers and images.
Suicide Squad director David Ayer recently opened up about these tattoos in an interview with Yahoo Movies, saying that there is in fact a deeper meaning behind each one of them.
“The tattoos tell a very specific story,” he said. “And eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and Easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.”
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
