Principle photography for Justice League officially began awhile ago, and most of the recurring characters have already reported to the London set. The return of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is inevitable, but up until recently it was unclear when the studio would bring the character back into play. Surely someone who is both an arch nemesis to the currently dead Superman would carry some weight in the epic team up film, but no plans had been revealed.
Recently Eisenberg confirmed while talking to Short List that he will in fact make his epic return in Justice League and that he will begin filming in August. Given this detail it doesn’t sound like his role will be large in lines, but as we’ve learned in the past, sometimes the roles that carry the most weight, don’t have the most screen time. Revealing both his return, and some passionate thoughts on the character and portraying him, the actor said,
“I loved the character and it was the most fun I’ve ever had at playing a role, and most challenging, in a great way, and most rewarding. I would love to play it for years. The character I play is so unusual and complicated. As an actor he’s everything you’d want to do. It’s very exciting for me to play that role. And, secondarily, it’s interesting to be in these massive, high-profile movies, because all the stuff around you as an actor is really good. All the artists are really great, so you walk on to a set and it’s the most-detailed, comprehensive set, and as an actor it really fills in your imagination in a special way. You’re also acting with incredible actors. In the last movie I had lots of scenes with Holly Hunter, who has been one of my favorite actors since I was young. This all exists because this movie is so massive that they attract so many talented people, even in smaller positions. It was really special to me. The most exciting part was to play such an interesting character and I certainly hope he stays alive throughout the next few films.”
Eisenberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor has been on of the most controversial pieces of comic book movies. While a great deal enjoyed the new take on a classic character, many more argue that the adaptation was too unfaithful, and was one of the movies’ major downfalls. A massive question fans are left with at the end of Batman v Superman is how Luthor is affected and what the future of his character will be. Odds are that BvS was just an origin for Lex, and the classic character we know is coming in November of 2017. Of course, this could also be wishful thinking by a DC fan.
