Although being one of the more important political leaders of the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War, Mon Mothma has had very screen time during Star Wars films. She first appeared in Return of the Jedi in 1983, followed by a short cameo in Revenge of the Sith in 2005 that eventually became a deleted scene. Although she was not a character frequently reappearing in the films, she established herself as an important part of the Rebel Alliance in many Star Wars comic books, video games, and even appeared in both the Clone Wars television show and movie before the birth of the Rebel Alliance. However, Mon Mothma will return to the big screen as she will return as one of the leaders of the Rebel Alliance in Rogue One.
Despite having limited screen time in each of the live action films she has appeared in, Mon Mothma will reportedly play a larger role in Rogue One. Actress Genevieve O’Reilly, who played Mon Mothma for the deleted scene in Revenge of the Sith, will reprise her role as Mon Mothma. According to the president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, Mon Mothma will appear much more than expected in Rogue One:
“We actually see quite a bit of her. The Rebel alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do.”
Genevieve O’Reilly will return as Mon Mothma when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on December 16th later this year.
