Captain America: Civil War featured the return of nearly every superhero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, except for Thor and the Hulk. Ever since it was announced the two would not make another appearance in the MCU until Thor: Ragnarok, in which they would star alongside one another, fans speculated as to which team the two heroes would choose; Team Captain America or Team Iron Man. Although it would make since for Bruce Banner to side with Cap, specifically against the government, it is not as easy to guess where Thor’s allegiance would lie.
The director of the upcoming Thor film, Taika Waititi, weighed in on which side he believes Thor would choose if he was present for the events of Civil War. During an interview, Waititi spoke on the matter, saying:
“We’ve talked a little bit about this. Personally, I feel Thor would have started his own team. He wouldn’t have liked the idea of those teams. But, even though Thor is from outer space and he lives in a palace, part of me likes to think he would side with Cap.”
Speculating which side Thor would choose is not an easy thing to do, especially considering how much he differs from every other hero on the Avengers. Each of the members is from earth, they are mortal, and none of them were born with their powers, unlike Thor. Due to his major indifference with each member of the Avengers, it makes sense for Thor to start his own team. Even if Thor were present for the events of Civil War, it is likely the God of Thunder would think the problems of the Avengers were lesser than him, in turn not interfering at all with something so irrelevant to himself.
Thor is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the third film of his series, Thor: Ragnarok, which premieres in theaters November 3rd, 2017.
