Joss Whedon Explains Decision To Give Hawkeye A Family In ‘Age Of Ultron’

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye had a much more pivotal role in Avengers: Age Of Ultron than he did in 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, which included him having a wife and two kids that none of his fellow Avengers knew about except for Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, whom he has a much deeper relationship with than anyone else on the team.

In a recent Q&A on his TumblrAge Of Ultron director Joss Whedon was asked why he made the decision to have Clint Barton have a family, and he had this to say:

“I loved the idea that one Avenger had a secret and that it was that he was a normal guy who is genuinely connected to the world in a way no other Avenger is. We cut a lot of the misdirection that would have made the reveal more fun, but emotionally and thematically it still works great for me.”

Though some fans might have been confused by the seemingly random inclusion of a family, Barton actually has one in the comics as well. Would you like to see the MCU further explore Hawkeye’s background? Sound off in the comments or on Twitter / Instagram!
