Spoiler Warning: this article contains spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Rogue One has launched to mostly positive reactions from fans worldwide, and is currently crushing the worldwide box office. Among other characters, Rogue One introduced the rebel extremist Saw Gerrera (first featured in the animated series Star Wars Rebels) to the big screen. Gerrera, portrayed by Forest Whitaker, met an untimely death at the hands (or rather, the cannon) of the Death Star. Many complained that Gerrera, an extremist who had fought against the empire tooth and nail for years, would not simply have given up and remained in his base to die. Addressing this issue, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had this to say:
“With Saw Gerrera, we just became very intrigued with him as a character [from The Clone Wars] and how he fits inside this story….To be honest, we originally thought we were going to develop Saw into something much larger, but we couldn’t accommodate it. So he is not in the movie as much as we would like to have him in the movie, which creates the opportunity to explore his character even further in our future development.”
It seems that Lucasfilm had ideas for Whitaker’s character, but simply did not have the time to flesh him out in Rogue One. However, Kennedy hinted at future projects which will further explore the rebel’s character. Perhaps Saw Gerrera will appear in another Star Wars movie in the future.
