Despite having been vital parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye/Clint Barton and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff have not gotten the spotlight they deserve. Although expert assassin’s and marksmen, they are still only humans among billionaires in high-tech battle suits, gods, and monsters. Nevertheless, the two have a compelling past and an interesting relationship with each other, both of which could certainly make for intriguing movies.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige repeatedly stated his desire to do a Black Widow movie somewhere down the road, and Johansson herself has also expressed her interest. As for a team-up film, though, the chances might not be as good. While speaking with British newspaper Metro, Jeremy Renner revealed that as of now, there don’t seem to be any plans.
“I always thought it would make sense early on to do a Hawkeye/Widow movie because they’re quite similar – they don’t have powers, have high skill sets, and have history together, but I don’t think there are any discussions about that happening. I’d love to do it, though.”
Both Renner and Johansson are currently working on next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Through previous films, the entire core cast of the MCU has become close friends with each other and they continue to maintain that relationship.
“We’ve shot in London but it’s hard for all of us to be away from our families so we’re doing the next two back-to-back in Atlanta. We’ve become great friends,” Renner explains. “I see Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson quite a lot. Chris Hemsworth has been so busy I haven’t hung out with him for a while and Elizabeth Olsen is a neighbor, so I see her quite often.”
After Infinity War, it is almost certain that some of the core Avengers we have now will retire. Going forward, it would make sense for Marvel to both introduce new characters, but also delve deeper into some of their characters who have not yet been explored as well as others – cue Black Widow film.
