In about a month the much anticipated Logan will hit theaters, which is Hugh Jackman’s last time as the iconic character. This film’s portrayal of the character is unique, as it presents the audience with a much older and vulnerable Logan/Wolverine. It is a loose adaption of the famous Old Man Logan story in the comics. Jackman discussed how he approached playing an older Wolverine, and talked about the advice he took from actor Jim Broadbent.
“When he was playing older, [Broadbent] would tape a little stone to his heel,” Jackman said. “I would have that, just to remind myself of a limp. [Logan’s] body hurts. His joints hurt. His heart hurts. Psychologically, he’s damaged. What’s the collateral damage of being Wolverine for all those years?”
Mangold then went on to reveal that he took inspiration from the iconic Clint Eastwood, in the classic Western film, Unforgiven.
“[Hugh Jackman] kind of looks like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, while Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier has a little bit of hair,” Mangold said. “[That] could be kind of sacrilege. The theory was that he originally lost all his hair because it’s just too damn busy [in his head] to grow hair – the idea for me was, well, maybe there’s a little fringe on there, because things are slowing down mentally.”
Those are fascinating films to be inspired from. Jackman followed Broadbent’s advice on playing a physically older character by putting a stone in his heel. It really seems like his performance is going to be intense. The Clint Eastwood comparison I could also see, because in Unforgiven Eastwood’s character plays a bounty hunter who comes out of retirement, kind of like Logan in this film.
Mangold also talked about another film he was inspired by, which fans may not expect.
“I said, ‘I want to make Little Miss Sunshine with Logan, Charles Xavier, and X-23. Trap these superheroes in a van on a highway in the year 2029 and see what happens.’”
Little Miss Sunshine is definitely not a movie people think of, when watching the trailers.
Jackman then went on to praise Patrick Stewart.
“I always tell my wife, ‘when I grow up, I want to be like Patrick Stewart.’ He wakes up every morning of his life, and for thirty minutes, he gets a cup of tea, and reads a book. He reads something he loves, every day of his life. This guy knows how to live!”
It really seems like this film is going to be something special with all of these inspirations. Just from trailers released, some people are saying this movie has a chance for serious award contention.
Logan hits theaters March 3rd, 2017.
