The Fantastic Four have had a tough time on the big screen. Fox originally tried in 2005 and again in 2007 to bring Marvel’s First Family to life on film and failed both times. The studio’s most recent attempt in 2015 was by far the most disappointing as the movie was universally panned by everyone who saw it.
After the reaction for 2015’s Fantastic Four (marketed as Fan4stic), rumors began swirling that after 3 failed attempts at creating a good movie featuring the team, Fox was looking to sell the rights back to Marvel and add them to their cinematic universe. Since then, no such move has been made by either studio which begs the question: what’s going to happen to the property?
In an interview with ComicBook, Simon Kinberg, producer on Fox’s upcoming film Logan, spoke about the Fantastic Four’s future at the studio and whether or not they’ll try again down the line to accurately bring the team to life on the big screen.
“Hutch [Parker] and I were together on Fantastic Four, the most recent one. We love that cast. Obviously, the movie wasn’t what we wanted it to be and it wasn’t received the way we wanted it to be. Yes, we would love to make another Fantastic Four movie! We feel like there’s a great Fantastic Four movie to be made and I think it would hue closer to the tone of the original, the source material, the comics, but we want to make that movie.”
Still, they might have to wait awhile before attempting to revisit those characters. Fan4stic left a really bad taste in the mouth of comic book fans and fans of the characters, so Fox would be wise to tread lightly when touching this beloved team again.
