Chris Evans Possibly Retiring From Role As Captain America After Next Two ‘Avengers’ Films

Avengers: Infinity War is going to be the biggest comic book movie event to date when it releases May 4th of next year, and it is going to bring all of our favorite Marvel characters onto one screen. Though the following Avengers film is still untitled, it will still be shot back to back with Infinity War and will likely see the return of many faces from the former (perhaps those who don’t perish, anyway). One of those faces in particular, Chris Evans’ Captain America, may not be returning past the untitled project. In an interview with the actor, Esquire wrote about the discussion of his future in the franchise.

“Settling in on the couch, he groans. Evans explains that he’s hurting all over because he just started his workout routine the day before to get in shape for the next two Captain America films. The movies will be shot back to back beginning in April. After that, no more red- white-and-blue costume for the thirty-five-year-old. He will have fulfilled his contract.”

The training for any actor in a super role is strenuous and takes its toll, and with Evans having been portraying Steve Rogers for 8 years (by the time Infinity War‘s followup comes out), it undoubtedly has become tiresome. This will also be the time that his contract with Marvel is up, so he won’t be obligated to come back. Should he step down, we have two candidates to take up the mantle: Bucky and Sam. Now, we last saw Bucky get put into cryosleep in Wakanda because he doesn’t want to risk anything until he can be un-brainwashed. But there’s no way to say this won’t happen between Black Panther and the next two Avengers films. Sam also has potential, but knowing how Steve feels about Bucky, he’d want to pass the shield to his lifelong friend. All of this is pure speculation as nothing has been confirmed on the matter yet. Be sure to stay tuned for updates on all things Avengers!
