Since Tim Miller departed from the Deadpool sequel and David Leitch came aboard, we’ve been wondering how Leitch’s take on the film will differ from its predecessor. CinemaBlend got to interview the director at CinemaCon, and he revealed how much work is being put into keeping Deadpool 2 familiar to fans of the first one, but also mixing that familiarity with new elements he will bring to it.
“It’s kind of been an all-encompassing collaboration, and actually when I came on it was really an open forum to pitch all ideas. There may be camps. Obviously action is in my DNA, and they do look to me for that, and I might look for them, ‘Is my idea funny?’ It’s a great team. We’re really collaborating, and I’m loving the process. They’re open to hear my fart jokes as much as anybody’s!”
Having Leitch on the same team as Reynolds, Reese, and Wernick, it seems that there is a good balance between humor and action being brought to the project. Leitch went on to talk about how the sequel stacks up to the original.
“I think you have to pay homage to this movie that’s so beloved. Everybody is anticipating it. And I think we have to find a way to make it distinctly our own, and we’re doing that. The DNA of Deadpool shouldn’t change. He’s such a lovable character, we’re going to carry that through.”
Of course no one wants to just see a repeat of the first movie, but there are aspects of it that definitely should be used going forward. That said, it will be interesting to see the new director’s take on the character and where the franchise moves from last year’s box office hit.
What do you guys think? Are you excited to see how Leitch does with Deadpool 2? Are you still apprehensive about the whole director change? Let us know in the comments as well as on our Twitter and Instagram!
