‘Deadpool 2’ To Be Both A Standalone Film And Setup For ‘X-Force’

After losing both its director and score composer, Deadpool 2 is now back on the right track and is expected to commence production fairly soon. The first installment was undeniably a great success, so it’s a good sign that at least the writers are coming back for the sequel.

While promoting Life, their latest project, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese took some time to talk about what Deadpool 2‘s place in the X-Men universe will be and its impact on future movies. Obviously, the merc with a mouth will continue to be a key character, with both Deadpool 3 and an X-Force movie having been confirmed to be in the works. So how exactly are those projects connected?

“[Deadpool 2] is working in an expansive way towards ‘X-Force’, which will really be more of an ensemble,” Reese tells Cinemablend. “But then that will allow us to do both an ‘X-Force’ movie and a ‘Deadpool 3’, which actually contracts back down… So I think we’ll be able to take two paths. One is where we’re launching something bigger, but then another where we’re contracting and staying personal and small. So I think best of all worlds, really.”

So, while Deadpool 2 will lay the groundwork for X-Force (after all, it will introduce both Cable and Domino), the creative team does realize Deadpool’s solo potential, which is why Deadpool 3 will narrow the scope again and focus solely on Wade Wilson.

“Our first goal is to tell a Deadpool story in an emotional, fun, satisfying way,” Reese continued, “And then the fact that we’re setting up something in the future — it’s happening, but you’re not gonna see that mustache-twirling villain, who is going ‘Hahaha, [it’s all coming into place].’ You’re just not going to see that because that’s not our game.

…Deadpool is a character piece, Deadpool is the leader of this very dysfunctional family. There are new people coming into that family, and there are old people that you’ve fallen in love with — with the conflict between Deadpool and, for example, Colossus and NTW. So yeah, it’s a delicate balance, but primarily keeping a Deadpool movie.”

Deadpool 2 will be directed by John Wick helmer David Leitch and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Ryan Reynolds and Zazie Beetz will star as Deadpool and Domino; more casting announcements are expected to drop soon.
