Hugh Jackman Initially Wanted Alternate ‘Logan’ Ending

With the release of Logan came the end to Hugh Jackman’s amazing take on the Wolverine. The R-rated film not only introduced us to Laura Kinney, aka X-23, but gave a proper closing to Jackman’s chapter. Whether or not it was a perfect ending is up to the fans themselves, but take a moment to think about this: could you imagine a different ending to the movie?

It may be hard to imagine any other ending to the movie, but for Hugh Jackman, another ending was his first thought. In an interview with Yahoo, he spoke about Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven being a strong inspiration for his final movie as Logan. In Unforgiven, the main character’s past comes back to haunt him, and he must deal with the consequences of his past actions. Jackman felt that Wolverine should follow in Eastwood’s character’s footsteps in this regard. Jackman also states:

“It was always floated that Logan would possibly die. I said, ‘Let’s be open, because it may be more powerful for him not to die.'”

In the end, however, Jackman was a fan of the theatrical ending of Logan. Director James Mangold was the man responsible for convincing the Austrailian actor that the Wolverine needed a permanent ending. About Mangold, Jackman says:

“James was always certain of that ending, and he was right. What’s most poignant for someone who is thought to be indestructible is him dying while saying, ‘This is what it feels like.'”

What is your opinion of the ending for Logan? Should the ending have followed in the footsteps of Unforgiven, or was it a perfect ending for the character? Let us know in the comments, as well as on our Twitter and Instagram!
