It’s not long until fans of Tom Holland’s incarnation of ‘Spider-Man’ will witness a full movie featuring the younger web-slinger with Spider-Man: Homecoming arriving in just a few months. Now, Exhibitor Relations is reporting that a live action R-Rated Venom movie will be arriving on October 5th 2018! Exhibitor Relations also reports that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer, Alex Kurtzman, will be at the helm of the film.
Keep in mind that nothing has been confirmed by Sony as of yet. It’s also important to remember when talking about ‘Spider-Man’ and the other related characters that Spider-Man is still technically a Sony property, but Marvel studios certainly gave creative input on Spider-Man: Homecoming.
This is not the first time that a Venom movie has been reported. During the time that Andrew Garfield was still involved with the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise, a Venom movie was part of the slate that was leaked during the Sony hacks in 2015 along with a Sinister Six movie.
Let’s assume that this report is true, one of the questions that it raises is, will it be attatched to the rest of the MCU like the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming? Only time will tell, but it would make sense given Tom Holland’s involvement in the MCU. However, this does not mean that the Venom movie has to influence the overall story of the MCU in any way.
R-Rated comic book movies such as Logan and Deadpool are some of the most popular comic book movies of the last 5 years. Making the Venom movie R-Rated would give the studio slightly more freedom to push the violence levels of the titular character, but does Venom NEED to be R-Rated to be done well? Perhaps if the character of ‘Carnage’ was involved. The studio could still make a great Spider-Man/Venom movie with a hard PG-13, which would make the movie available to a wider audience, and be more in keeping with the tone of the rest of the MCU.
What do you think of this report? Do you think a Venom movie will happen? Do you think it needs to be R-Rated to be done well? Do you think it take place within the MCU? Make sure you let us know your thoughts in the comment section below or on our Instagram and Twitter!
