As with any sequel, fans are wondering how Deadpool 2 will stack up against the success of its predecessor. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have now touched on this, distinguishing between what should and shouldn’t be done in order for the sequel to match, if not surpass the franchise’s first film.
“I think we definitely kept our sights on the sequels that have succeeded, because there have been sequels like Godfather Part 2 and The Road Warrior… Aliens,” Reese responded, as his writing partner Paul Wernick chimed in with Austin Powers. “I would say Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2 I enjoyed more than the first…so there are definitely examples of sequels that either equal or surpass the first, and that’s what we’re trying to keep our eye on, because we don’t want to be accused of making a sequel that is not nearly as good as the first–there are plenty of examples of those. So it’s just about quality control and making sure you don’t settle and making sure you strike new ground but also tap into what was successful about the first one. It’s a fine line. I hope we can write it. We’re doing it both with Zombieland 2 and Deadpool 2 and good Lord willing, maybe even a Life 2. We’re not against sequels, as long as there’s an interesting, compelling reason to tell more story that does involve more than just dollar signs.”
They seem very aware of what needs to be done in order to achieve success with the Merc’s second solo outing, as well as how it needs to be done. The writing duo then went on to talk about the types of mutant cameos we can expect.
“Yeah, Cable and Domino grabbed the headlines on Deadpool. But there are definitely some more obscure characters that people know or that real diehards know that will be in there just by virtue of we need a new villain, and we need some new good guys to compliment (Deadpool), but it is growing. Of course, it will be all about the lunacy that is Deadpool himself.”
It will be interesting to see how many characters we see appear, and to what extent they appear. We already know that Cable and Domino will be joining the roster, as well as the returning Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. With the film already becoming stacked, it keeps us on our toes for what else Deadpool 2 has in store. Be sure to stay tuned for updates on all things Deadpool!
