‘The Flash’ Season 3 Episode 17 Review

*Spoilers Below For Tonight’s Episode of The Flash*

This week’s episode, titled Duet, of The Flash brought out the musical talent of a number of our heroic stars. Aside from this, it didn’t have much going for it. It is understandable that this would be entertaining for fans of Glee and anyone who enjoys a musical. However, the episode’s plot seemed a bit forced just to be able to do the musical.

Music Meister was very underdeveloped. For one, his trance sent Barry and Kara into the “musical universe”, as well as being able to steal the powers of the two. Not to mention he inexplicably knew personal things about the heroes; Flash’s and Kid Flash’s secret identities, Wally’s trip into the Speed Force, and the relationships between Barry and Iris as well as Kara and Mon-El. His omniscience and ability to absorb others’ superpowers is never talked about, and then he vanishes.  His powers didn’t have anything to do with music directly either, seeing as how he stated both Barry’s and Kara’s minds created the “musical universe” when it could have been anything their minds conjured up. It feels as though Music Meister was shoehorned in just to set up the musical.

The plot within the subconscious music world wasn’t very engaging, aside from the singing. It was pushed along quickly and haphazardly in order to get to the conclusion that the only way out of the comatose state for Barry and Kara was the power of the love between them and their significant others to wake them up…which was brought about with a kiss. This Sleeping Beauty-esque imagery felt very cheesy and unoriginal, used only to bring the story to a close. The only lasting impact that the episode will have on the season is that now Barry and Iris are engaged again, this time seemingly for the right reasons.

On the whole, it would’ve been nicer to have gotten a continuation of what’s going on with Savitar instead of the musical. While it was entertaining, it wasn’t developed as thoroughly as it could have been. It was a bit nostalgic and fun for Glee fans, but a crossover episode dealing with the Savitar plot or a subplot relating to the larger plot would’ve likely sat better with Flash fans. Next week brings the introduction of Abra Kadabra, who is from the future and claims to know who Savitar is, so episode 18 should definitely be interesting.
