The New ‘Matrix’ Movie Will Not Be A Reboot

The Hollywood Reporter announced this week that Warner Brothers and Zak Penn will be developing a new incarnation of ‘The Matrix’. This received mixed reviews from fans due to the love for the original and the general sense of concern towards reboots and remakes.  However, this does not need to be a worry, since it was now confirmed that this movie will not be a reboot.

According to the film’s writer, this movie will not be a reboot nor a remake. Zak Penn who will be writing this movie, released the following statement on his official twitter account:

“All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words “reboot” and “remake” were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves. How about just re-release the matrix? Don’t reboot it, you can’t do better. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories.”

This is an interesting decision, because it opens up a world of opportunity. The huge variable going forward will be Keanu Reaves’ involvement, and if the success of the ‘John Wick’ franchise will play into his jumping back into the franchise he made famous 18 years ago. Comparisons can be drawn to movies that have adopted universes from past eras with their own spin and new characters such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Creed. This will allow Penn and Warner Brothers to build their own story in this vast universe as opposed to remaking a beloved Sci-Fi classic.

Penn himself compared what he wants to do with what 20th Century Fox is doing with their current X-Men universe saying:

“Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”

So it is safe to say that this movie will not be a reboot, but that is all we know so far.

Are you more or less excited for this movie now that you know it will not be a reboot and instead will be a new entity into the series? Do you think Keanue Reaves will return in his iconic role of Neo? If not, who would you like to see take on the lead role in this movie? Let us know in the comments!
