‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Producers Confirm Twist Behind Zendaya’s Character

Warning: Spider-Man: Homecoming spoilers ahead! Read at your own risk if you haven’t seen the movie!

If you’ve seen Spider-Man: Homecoming, then you were probably surprised by Zendaya’s character Michelle. At the end of the film, when Peter’s academic decathlon was preparing to move into the next year, Michelle was asked to be the new leader. When she accepts, she shares to the team that her friends can call her ‘MJ,’ which, of course, sends fans into a frenzy.

MJ, as most people know, fan or not, is one of Peter Parker’s most well-known love interests. Mary Jane and Michelle, however, are NOT the same person, but fans are still left wondering if Zendaya’s character will turn into Peter’s future wife. The film’s producers do say that Michelle will not be taking the same path as Mary Jane did in the comics, however.

President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal commented on Zendaya’s role, after the film’s premiere. Kevin Feige said the ‘twist’ was really just meant to be homage:

“We never even looked at it as a big reveal necessarily but more of just a fun homage to his past adventures and his past love. She’s not Mary Jane Watson. She never was Mary Jane Watson. She was always this new high school character, Michelle, who we know there’s an “M” in Michelle and an “M” in Mary. So we’re so clever and we thought, “Wouldn’t it be neat if her initials were MJ?” And then I think it leaked that she would be playing MJ and then it became a whole headache for Zendaya to have to navigate. It was never a big, “Oh my God, it’s a big reveal!” There are big reveals in the movie. That’s not one of them. Is she going to date Peter? Are they going to fall in love? She seems to be intrigued with him. There’s a nice chemistry there. Who knows what will happen in the future films?”

Judging by the explanation Feige gave, it is likely that Michelle very well may share a romance with Peter Parker, just as Mary Jane has. As for everything else, Zendaya’s character isn’t based on any Marvel character specifically, leaving plenty of room for development and expansion. If Zendaya has a say, however, you can be positive that Michelle will have a bigger role in the sequel to the Spider-Man film.

What is your opinion on Michelle? Will she develop well as a character, and what are your predictions for her? Let us know in the comments, on our Twitter, and on our Instagram.
