If Jared Leto’s performance as the Joker didn’t quite do it for you, then this news might be a bit of an excitement. It has been reported today by Deadline that Warner Brothers and DC are working on an origin film for the iconic Clown Prince of Crime. According to the report, Todd Phillips will be directing the film, as well as writing it alongside Scott Silver. Martin Scorsese will be joining Phillips to produce.
The Joker’s origin is something that’s been left fairly ambiguous, for the most part, so it’ll be interesting to see the direction in which they take the project. This origin story will not coincide with the DCEU, but instead will launch a new slate of films under the DC banner that will serve to expand the company’s cinematic properties. Seeing as this is the case, Jared Leto will not be portraying this version of the Joker, but he will be reprising the role in upcoming DCEU movies (Suicide Squad 2 and the Harley Quinn solo film). The report also discusses the setting of this project being the early 80s, and having more of a gritty crime tone to it. This would be very interesting to see because we could get a mobster/crime boss take on the character, which we haven’t seen on-screen since Jack Nicholson’s portrayal. This expansive new banner for DC could be the place where they release a ton of on-screen adaptations for the elseworld storylines that fans are dying to see. More news is sure to follow, so be sure to stay tuned for updates!
