No one knows too much about the DCEU’s future films beyond Aquaman in 2018. Shazam! has been announced to go into production after Aquaman concludes its production, and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg talks about how he’ll approach directing the film.
“It’s very fun, lighthearted movie,” Sandberg said. “It’s about a kid who gets to become an adult superhero, so that’s just gonna be so fun to explore.”
So it’s safe to say that Shazam! will not be like his horror outings, but more of a fun lighthearted film. Shazam, who was also known as Captain Marvel at one point, revolves around kid Billy Batson, who by saying Shazam turns into a demigod-like superhero.
Sandberg admits that he didn’t become familiar with the character later on in his life.
“To be honest, it was not a superhero I grew up with either. When I grew up in Sweden, there wasn’t a lot of Shazam around. So it’s someone who I’ve learned to love later in life as well, so I can relate to [people who are] new to Shazam. I think [it] might be a good thing that I’m doing it, because I know what you need to learn.”
Shazam isn’t exactly a household name like Superman or Batman, especially because of his recent official name change. He is growing in popularity through his role in the recent comics and his appearance in the DC Animated films. Obscure heroes have proven they can be box office successes, so this should be no different.
